Description: Bedford OSBT 'O' Series Short Wheel Base 5-ton Tipper Scale 1:24 Kit includes optional decalsfor 2 liveries plus assorted fleet numbers & registration plates A brief history of the Bedford Trucks The Bedford 'O' series chassis was introduced in 1939, just before the start of World War II during which all industrial production concentrated on military needs. The Ministry of Supply decided on two models from Bedford to meet limited commercial needs for goods vehicles from 1941 onwards. The OLBD was an 'O' SERIES LONG 5-tons nominal rating Dropside truck and the OSBT was an 'O' SERIES SHORT 5-tons nominal rating End Tipper. 5-tons refers to the carrying capacity. T Bedfords were made by Vauxhall Motors Ltd, Luton, Bedfordshire. The 'O' type was re-specified for wartime military use resulting in the OYD 3-ton truck of which over 72,000 were built. These had the same 'O' series cab but with the more utilitarian simplified military style mudguards, sloping bonnet and front crash bar. The OYD was specified with single rear wheels and oversize tyres. There was also the OXC tractor unit version for hauling articulated trailers. Production resumed in 1945 and in the immediate postwar period Bedford 'O' types were probably the most common trucks on British roads.     Description: The Bedford QL was a series of trucks, manufactured by Bedford for use by the British Armed Forces in WW2. At the outbreak of WW 2, Bedford was contracted by the British War Office to produce a 3 ton 4x 4 general service truck. A pilot model was ready in February 1940 and quantity production started in March 1941. The QL was powered by a 3.5 litre, 6-cylinder petrol engine producing 72bhp, giving a governed top speed of 38mph. Thanks to its high ground clearance, cross-country tyres and a 2-speed, 4-wheel-drive transfer box located in the centre of the chassis (giving 8 forward gear ratios), the QL had excellent cross country mobility. The QLD was a general service cargo truck and was the most numerous in the series.
