Description: Airfix 1/72 Scale Avro Lancaster B.III (Special) 'The Dambusters' Model Kit Following a short but intense period of training, the volunteer group of crack airmen who made up the new RAF No. 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton on the night of 16th/17th May 1943, at the start of the most audacious bombing raid in history. Led by their enigmatic and inspirational commanding officer Guy Gibson, he is reputed to have said, 'This squadron will either make history, or it will be completely wiped out', but nevertheless, every man was determined to play their part in this historic raid. Nineteen 'Special' Lancaster's and their crews sent a message to the German nation that could not be disguised by their propaganda ministers.     Description: HK Models 1/48 Scale Avro Lancaster B Mk III Dambuster ED932/AJ-G Model Kit Operation Chastise was a high-risk bombing raid carried out by the Royal Air Force on the night of 16/17 May 1943 against the Möhne, Edersee, and Sorpe dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany. The raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, 617 Squadron, and involved 19 specially modified Lancaster bombers. The aircraft were equipped with a new weapon called the bouncing bomb, which was designed to skip across the water and hit the dam wall below the waterline. The raid was ultimately successful, causing widespread flooding and damage to German industrial plants and infrastructure. However, 8 aircraft were lost with 53 aircrew killed and 3 aircrew taken prisoner. While the raid was considered a major success for the RAF, the designer of the bouncing bomb, Barnes Wallis, was appalled at the loss of aircrew.
