In May 1943 the decision was made to order another 1,000 Churchills and to continue production in 1944. The 1944 production would be of an improved model, the Heavy Churchill or A22F (redesignated as the A42 in 1945). The A22F used welded construction throughout the hull. The armour was made thicker, with up to 152mm at the front (more than on the famous Panzer VI Tiger). Earlier Churchills had used a composite construction, with the armour fitted on top of a mild steel framework. On the A22F the armour plate also served as the structure of the tank. A great example of one of these fittings was the 'carpet layer device' for crossing soft patches on beaches. The carpet (the most common form was hessian matting reinforced with steel tubes) was carried on a large bobbin at the front of the A.V.R.E. and was unwound by the vehicle itself running over it. A number of these were employed on the D-Day landing beaches. ' Hobart's Funnies' was the name given to these types of unusually modified tanks which operated during the Second World War by the United Kingdom's 79th Armoured Division or by specialists from the Royal Engineers. They were designed in the light of problems that more standard tanks experienced during the amphibious Dieppe Raid, so that the new models would be able to overcome the problems of the planned Invasion of Normandy. These tanks played a major part on the Commonwealth beaches during the landings. They were forerunners of the modern combat engineering vehicle and were named after their commander, Major General Percy Hobart. VII Plastic Model Kit Despite the serious teething problems in its mechanics, the British Infantry Tank MK.IV or the Churchill went on to earn a high reputation among the World War II British armoured fighting vehicles. Following the tradition of the rhombic-shaped predecessors during World War I, its design priority was placed on heavy armour, a wide trench crossing capacity and the ability to travel across the shell-torn battlefields.
