Description: These distinctively styled colour pencils are a popular choice with designers and illustrators as well as professional and leisure artists. Derwent Studio has a slim, 3.5mm colour strip, which is particularly suitable for detailed work. They can be sharpened to a fine, long lasting point which will not crumble during use. All Derwent Studio pencils are blendable (with pencil blend or paper stumps) and can be layered to create an infinite range of colours. We recommend using a good quality cartridge paper along with these pencils. Derwent Studio Pencil Metal Tin Sets - shop the best deal online on craftcompare.co.uk

Review: As the hardest pencil in the ranges available for derwent, these sharpen to an incredible point for detail work. The blend fantastically with oils or mediums, blending stumps etc. They are not for gouging paper to within an inch of its life, but for subtle and gradual layering effects. They do work brilliantly with Coloursoft and Artist pencils. They are Wax based and tend to bloom, but only slightly in comparison with cheaper pencils. I read questions like are they as good as Faber Castell. They are a different animal all together, FC are oil based, these are wax. They all work very well together and can only increase the enjoyment for drawing and would be an asset to anyones collection. I bought the tin of 24 Studio, theres enough variety in colour for details.

Review: I chose this rating with regards to the performance of the pencils. The quality is very good and the price I paid was very good. I have lots of coloured pencils from different manufacturers. I know that these are quite a hard pencil, (the same as Derwent Artists but slimmer with thinner leads) For lots of purposes, like the Artists, they are fine. But when it comes to layering one colour on top of another (as with the Artists), I can only give them 3 stars because they skid after relatively little build up. I have this problem with all my colour pencils to a greater or lesser degree, and always find it frustrating. BUT YESTERDAY... I discovered BEROL VERITHIN pencils which are far cheaper and as good quality, albeit only a small colour range. The irony is that unlike all the other pencils I have, Derwent Artists, Derwent Studio, Derwent Coloursoft, Prismacolour, Caran d'ache Pablo, Polychromos, they layer wonderfully and are a pleasure to use with very satisfactory results. The colour build up is far more intense and vibrant than I can achieve with any of the others and remains clean. And so, Derwent Studio, you're just ok. I would advise anyone, whether you ar a serious colour pencil artist, or a novice at it, to give BEROL a try.
